Wanted: Dysfunctional Teams

Wanted: Dysfunctional TeamsIn a working world that needs a more collectivist approach – but seems hellbent on rewarding individualism – something has to change…

We’re all part of multiple teams: at home, at work, socially, through hobbies & affiliations & let’s be honest – most of them are dysfunctional in some way. By that, I don’t mean they’ve failed. Dysfunction is simply what happens when humans are involved & things don’t always work as intended.

We do fail, however, when we become complicit in the decline of these teams & choose not to address it – leader or not.

The push for fewer, bigger roles, combined with the pressure to do more with less (faster, better, & cheaper), has created a dynamic I’m seeing more & more – even in the most capable teams.

High-performing individuals remain exactly that: individuals.

Maybe they’re overwhelmed, under-resourced, over-promoted or fearing failure?

How we got here matters less than what we do next.

So, what’s the rub?

If I had a manifesto pledge (were this a political thing), it would be this:

Clarity, commitment, & collaboration must be invested in as deliberately as cost reduction, service improvement, & customer engagement.

Nobody wants more meetings – but what if the ones you did attend were well-structured, focused on the big things, & created real clarity of purpose & action?

Nobody enjoys hearing that they are contributing to poor cohesion – but what if you had the language to address issues in flight rather than after the crash?

Nobody wants to work in a silo – but what if, when you got stuck, others climbed in to help you out?

If this resonates, then you’re exactly who I want to talk to.

Because it doesn’t have to be this way & no matter how far-gone things might feel, there is always work that can be done.

If you want support in taking the “dys” out of dysfunctional, I offer a proven range of practical solutions to suit every team need whatever your starting position.
