What does Lucky mean to you

What does Lucky mean to youWhen I started my business just over two years ago, I originally registered it as ‘Lucky Man Coaching & Consulting’…

I incorporated it, bought the domain names, designed the logo, & set about telling the world…in spite of strong counsel to the contrary – from two marketeers, a friend who’d successfully created & sold several businesses, & a few raised family eyebrows – off I went.

The “Lucky Man” I referred to was far from the frivolous chancer that it was to conjure up for some. Quite the opposite.

It was more…

A statement of gratitude for the people & experiences I’d enjoyed so far

A nod to the idea “the harder I worked, the luckier I seemed to get”, &

A quiet indulgence of my love for a certain 90’s band & their song of the same name.

Then came the client conversations…

“No one wants a Coach who relies on luck & only works with men.”

“My Finance Director wouldn’t be comfortable signing off a supplier with ‘Lucky’ in their title.”

“Can you just remove your logo from the slides to avoid me having to explain it?”

Message received.

With Matthew Syed’s mantra of “learn fast, fail fast, move on” echoing in my head & my pride more than a little dented – ‘Stronger Humans’ was born.

After all, there were plenty of ways this venture could fail without relying solely on the name!

Looking back, it was absolutely the right call.

But I’ve also come to realise that luck gets a bad rap…

For me, luck is where ‘preparation meets opportunity’.

It’s where Krumboltz’s ‘Happenstance Theory’ comes alive – the idea that we can create or increase our luck & in turn opportunity, by being open to & prepared for unplanned events that serve our goals.

So, whether it’s in the name or not, ‘Lucky Man’ will always be part of my story.

With thanks to everyone who’s provided the ‘opportunity for my preparation’ so far & if you’re curious about how you (your team or organisation) can become luckier, stronger, or whatever you call the act of getting where you want to be, then message me at rupert@strongerhumans.com for a free 30-minute consultation.

P.S. I’m keeping the domain names… just in case 😉
