To exploit or explore – that is the question…

How much pain are you prepared to take in your current role before you choose to make a move?

We all have different thresholds & motivations for choosing to stay put or move on. When things are working well & we feel productive, have choice & our needs are met – we exploit the environment & are less inclined to create change.

On the flipside, if things are not so great at work we are more inclined to seek alternatives, more curious in search of newness & variety, our appetite for uncertainty also increases.

Your response to this may be binary – I either like where I am & exploit or I don’t & explore.

The reality is that it is good to be doing a bit of both. Why? Well, it keeps us challenged & reduces our chances of becoming too bored or complacent whilst at the same time it provides the impetus to understand whether what we have can be improved in some way. It also means we are less likely to have a knee-jerk reaction & move from something that is not great to something that is even worse (we’ve all been there!).

So how can I explore if I am happy in my job?

The reality is that it does not take too much effort… attend an external event where people like you who work for others may be hanging out, broaden your network on platforms such as this & stay curious or maybe take that call the next time a recruiter rings.

One increasingly popular way of exploiting & exploring is do so with a coach, someone who won’t tell you what to do but will partner with you, provoke thought & help you optimise your potential.

None of the above means you are obliged to do anything other than deepen your understanding & if the unpredictable nature of the job market currently is anything to go by – it may well be a smart & proactive step to take.
