- If I was looking back on this situation in 5 years’ time – how would I describe it? This can serve to reduce the detail & give you a different sense of perspective.
- What language is your inner critic using – how does it make you feel & is it helpful? According to the National Science Foundation (2012) up to 80% of our thoughts are negative so by labelling the emotion you can reduce its intensity which in turn can help you with more rational thoughts about a particular task or situation.
- What if it all goes right? Back to the percentage of thoughts that can be negative again, it should not come as a surprise that the stories we tell ourselves are often biased towards negative outcomes based on things that may have happened in the past. Try by switching the narrative to…. What if it all goes right?!
- What advice would I give a friend in the same situation? The mechanism for empathy in the brain is largely focused on others, so even if we are a highly empathetic person there is a good chance we are great at supporting others but not so good with ourselves. One way to get round this is to ask yourself what advice would I give a friend in the same situation?
